Cinnamon Desktop Environment Includes Full Wayland Support

The developers of the Linux Mint distribution announced the stabilization of support for the Wayland protocol in the desktop environment Cinnamon. The code base that powers the upcoming stable release of Cinnamon 6.8 has achieved almost parity in functionality when working with X11 and Wayland. Cinnamon 6.8 will fully support both X11 and Wayland. The December release of Linux Mint 23 will be the first in which Wayland support in Cinnamon will not be considered experimental.

Recent improvements in Cinnamon include:

  • When using Walyand, new windows, pop-up dialogs, and context menus are now correctly sized and positioned.
  • When working through Walyand, input focus is now correctly switched.
  • Fixed many bugs in Cinnamon, muffin, cinnamon-session and Xwayland that led to crashes when using Wayland.
  • Improved support for multi-monitor configurations and KVM monitor switches in a Wayland environment.
  • Applications using Wayland or launched through Xwayland, as well as in the composite server and desktop session, use hardware graphics acceleration implemented through Wayland protocols wl_drm and zwp_linux_dmabuf_v1, as well as hardware accelerated GBM over EGL on NVIDIA video cards.
  • Provides full support for high-density screens pixels (HiDPI) when using Wayland. Problems with scaling of icons and mouse cursors have been resolved. Fixed errors that appeared in applications based on the Chromium engine, such as Slack and VSCode.
  • When using Wayland, operation progress indicators have been implemented, for example, showing the progress of copying files in a button on the panel.
  • Basic applications launched via pkexec can be launched as Wayland clients without using Xwayland.
  • Added the “cinnamon-list-windows” command to make it easier to get a list of all open windows and determine their position, size, HiDPI data and related applications and backends.
  • The Muffin composite server provides rounding to integer coordinates and sizes of all graphic elements of the Clutter library for more accurate positioning and clear rendering of applets and worker components table.
  • Added support for sustemd units for user sessions (graphical-session.target), activated to launch related services in connection with a graphical session.
