Enthusiast recently made headlines in the gaming world by successfully translating and running the source code of the classic 1996 3D shooter Quake, along with the multiplayer edition of Quakeworld and language mods like Luau, inside the popular game world Roblox. The impressive feat was achieved using the Claude Fable AI model, with token costs amounting to $3,000. The port code has been generously published under the GPLv2 license, allowing other enthusiasts to explore and enjoy the experience.
Both multiplayer Quake engines, NetQuake for cooperative level completion and QuakeWorld for competitive player versus player combat, have been seamlessly ported. Players can utilize game resources from the shareware version of Quake, the full version of Quake, or LibreQuake. Additionally, support has been implemented for running unmodified QuakeC mods, adding to the versatility of the project. Notably, the Quake rasterizer has been replaced with Roblox EditableMesh for geometry rendering and lightmap for lighting calculations, providing a fresh visual perspective.
Several Roblox-specific changes have been introduced to enhance the gameplay experience. Players now appear as Roblox characters in Quake, adding a unique aesthetic touch. A new Roblox menu with touch screen control has been integrated, simplifying navigation within the game. Match management capabilities have been expanded, allowing for in-game voting and rule changes through an administrator menu. The inclusion of statistics with leaderboards and a censored rendering mode specifically designed for younger players further showcases the attention to detail in this innovative project.
