KDE Enhances GTK 2 App Support for Dark Theme

The latest weekly KDE development report has been released, highlighting some changes for both the upcoming KDE Plasma 6.8 branch, set for release on October 14, and the current KDE Plasma 6.7 branch, currently in beta testing before the scheduled release on June 16.

Changes in the KDE Plasma 6.8 branch include:

  • Expanded capabilities for defining the use of dark themes in GTK 2-based applications and applying dark options for icon themes to avoid light icons appearing in dark interfaces. This can be seen in the recent merge request.
  • Components for integration with web browsers now support Flatpak packages with Microsoft Edge, as highlighted in this bug report.
  • The top gripping area for dragging non-full-screen application windows using the Breeze theme has been enlarged, similar to previous enhancements for the bottom and side gripping areas. More details can be found in this bug report.
  • Notifications for low battery charge on connected devices now appear even in full-screen mode to ensure users don’t miss a full charge. This feature is highlighted in this merge request.
  • Various improvements include accounting for system animation speed settings in certain effects, unifying the presentation of access rights dialogues, and updates to the screen saver timeout and accessibility mode. These changes can be explored in the related bug reports and merge requests.

Moreover, in KDE Frameworks 6.28, improvements have been made to the alignment of thumbnails in file opening and saving dialogs. Additionally, the Meta key can now be used separately to open the overview mode in KWin. These enhancements are detailed in
