GentleOS Launches Retro GUI OS for Vintage PCs

Published The first release of GentleOS, an operating system for older 32-bit PCs and laptops. The project is developed by an enthusiast as a hobby and aims to provide a simple platform for retro technology lovers with a classic graphical interface. Supports work on computers with an i386 CPU, 4 MB of RAM and a VGA video card with a resolution of 640×480. The project code is written in C and distributed under the GPLv2 license. To launch, a disk image of 8 MB in size, and image for writing to a 1.4 MB floppy disk.

The OS is built on a monolithic architecture and is configured at the build stage. Drivers are available for VGA/SVGA video cards, keyboard, mouse (connection via PS/2 and serial port) and built-in speaker. The functionality of GentleOS is marked as completed – the only plans for the future are the creation of additional applications, optimization and bug fixes. Can be run both in QEMU and on real hardware.


From applications available calculator, calendar, clock, sound generator, a simple graphic editor and several games such as snake, mahjong, miner and Tetris.
