The Collabora company has announced the release of the platform CODE 26.04 (Collabora Online Development Edition), aimed at facilitating the rapid deployment of the Collabora Online system (formerly LibreOffice Online) on its servers. This platform enables remote collaboration with the office suite through the Web, offering functionality similar to Google Docs and Office 365. CODE is available as a pre-configured container for the Docker system, a virtual machine image, and a set of packages for popular Linux distributions. The project code is distributed under the MPLv2 license.
Collabora Online operates on a client-server architecture, with the server running LibreOffice Core responsible for document layout and rendering, while the web application handles the interface. Users can work with the office suite through a web browser, collaborating with multiple users simultaneously to make changes, leave comments, and answer questions. Each user’s contributions, edits, and cursor positions are highlighted in different colors.
CODE serves as the developer version of the Collabora Online platform, incorporating the latest advancements suitable for small teams or introductory testing. Additionally, Collabora Office is being developed to run Collabora Online on users’ local systems. In 2025, Collabora employees contributed 45% of all changes to LibreOffice, but a conflict between Collabora and The Document Foundation (TDF) led to the exclusion of all Collabora employees from TDF.
To address branding and marketing issues in 2020, Collabora created a fork of LibreOffice Online, continuing development under the name Collabora Online. The freeze on LibreOffice Online was reversed in 2026, recreating the repository as a fork of the current Collabora Online repository.
Main changes in CODE 26.04 include the integration of an AI assistant into document, spreadsheet, and presentation editors. In Writer, AI can be utilized to enhance, explain, rework, and process text.
