GenCAD: Image & Sketch-Based CAD Model Generator

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are working on the GenCAD project, a machine learning model aimed at generating 3D models from 2D images or sketches of parts. The GenCAD project goes beyond just creating a 3D model – it produces a complete parametric CAD program with a history of model construction commands, making it suitable for importing into parametric CAD systems.

During a discussion about the project, an enthusiast pointed out that creating CAD models can also be achieved without specialized machine learning models. Regular AI assistants such as Aider, OpenClaw, and QwenCode, along with standard AI services, can be used for this purpose. As an illustration, a collection of prompts has been released that enables the generation of programs for the OpenSCAD platform based on descriptions, desired characteristics, and visual examples. These programs can then produce CAD models in STL or OFF format with a parameterized configuration.
