The next weekly KDE development report has been published, which presents the first batch of changes for the KDE Plasma 6.8 branch, scheduled for release on October 14th. The development of the new branch began after the KDE Plasma 6.7 branch was moved to the beta testing stage and the associated codebase was frozen from making functional changes. The release of KDE Plasma 6.7 is scheduled for June 16.
Among the changes added over the past week to the KDE 6.7 branch:
- In the built-in server for organizing remote work with the desktop (krdp), implementing the RDP protocol, added support for Progressive Encoding Mode. This mode can be used for clients that do not support the H.264 codec, have problems with the codec, or use a communication channel with insufficient bandwidth. Switching between H.264 and progressive encoding is done dynamically. Progressive encoding is more effective for session activities such as text editing. Additionally, the krdp server has been optimized to improve performance and reduce latency.
- In Kwin, version support has been added 3.2 of the text-input protocol, which allows composite servers to implement input methods and send text to applications. The new version of the protocol implements support for additional actions in addition to text insertion, added language flag to convey language information, added queries for showing and hiding the input panel, and added preedit_hint flag to configure pre-edit style.
- Provided the ability to customize the situations in which the virtual keyboard is shown. For example, in addition to enabling/disabling virtual keyboard support, you can now link its display to the presence of a touch screen and tablet on systems with and without a mouse connected.
