The developers of the Artix Linux distribution recently announced the decision to end support for XLibre and switch back to using X.Org Server in their upcoming release, Artix 2026.08. This means that XLibre packages will no longer be distributed and existing systems will have their XLibre packages replaced with those from X.Org Server.
Artix Linux was among the first projects to fully migrate to XLibre. This distribution, built on the Arch Linux package base, is known for using system managers such as OpenRC, runit, dinit, and s6, leaving the choice up to the user.
The decision to move away from XLibre was influenced by numerous problem reports from users on the forum. The mounting complaints prompted Artix developers to reconsider their support for XLibre. These issues culminated in a negative response from the XLibre project, leading to attacks on one of the Artix developers responsible for XLibre’s implementation and support within the distribution. Following the backlash, the developer chose to step away from the project, discontinuing maintenance of XLibre packages.
