The new stable release of the Live distribution grml 2026.09 has been introduced, offering a range of programs tailored for system administrators to handle tasks such as data recovery and incident analysis. Celebrating its 20th anniversary last year, grml is built on the Debian GNU/Linux package base and features a graphical environment using the Fluxbox window manager, with Zsh as the default shell. The full iso image size is 1.1 GB, while the shortened version is 643 MB. Builds are available for x86_64 and ARM64 architectures.
In this new release:
- The transition to the Debian 14 package base and Linux kernel 7.1.8 has been completed.
- The inclusion of grml-live in the build system, used for creating custom Live distributions, no longer supports work in chroot environments without the pseudo-FS /proc. User namespaces are now utilized to isolate grml-live.
- The console window manager GNU Screen has been updated to version 5.0.1, bringing incompatibility at the configuration level with the 4.x branch.
- The exfat module has been added to the initial initramfs RAM disk to support booting from USB drives with the ExFAT file system.
