PorteuX 2.7 Released: Slackware-Based OS Update

An available release of the distribution kit PorteuX 2.7, based on Slackware and developed under the influence of the Slax and Porteus projects, has been announced. PorteuX notes the presence of pre-configured environments based on various desktops such as Cinnamon, COSMIC, GNOME, KDE, LXDE, LXQt, MATE, and Xfce. The distribution includes hardware acceleration for processing multimedia files on Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA GPUs, live mode loading in 3 seconds, system image in read-only mode with additional installation of applications from the PorteuX App Store catalog, support for rollback of update installations, boot mode to RAM (copy2ram), and the ability to boot over the network. The project has generated 8 assemblies, approximately 600 Mb in size.

Key changes in the release include:

  • To work with the NTFS file system, the ntfs-plus driver is used instead of ntfs3.
  • New versions of desktop environments like KDE Plasma 6.7.0, GNOME 50.2, Cinnamon 6.6.8, COSMIC 1.0.16, and LXQt 2.4.0 have been implemented.
  • Updated package versions including Linux kernel 7.1.1, GCC 16.1.0, FFmpeg 8.1.1, Qt 6.11.1, NVIDIA 610.43.02.
  • Various optimizations for performance improvements.
  • Web camera support enhancements and addition of a new cursor theme and the noto-fonts-ttf font.
  • Additional features such as gpgmepp bindings for GnuPG and support for more image formats in KDE image viewer.

Furthermore, the PorteuX 2.7 distribution showed higher performance levels compared to CachyOS in Geekbench 6 testing mode. Various improvements and updates have been made in this release to enhance user experience and performance.
