KDE Boosts Performance with External GPUs

Weekly KDE Development Report Highlights Changes for KDE Plasma 6.8 Branch

The next weekly KDE development report has been published, showcasing some of the changes for the KDE Plasma 6.8 branch, set for release on October 14th. Here are some of the recent updates:

  • Improved performance with external video cards by addressing issues with the linux-dmabuf v5 Wayland protocol. Previously, the composite manager could only work with one video card, resulting in the need for constant frame copying through RAM, leading to decreased performance with external GPUs connected via USB-C. The new linux-dmabuf v6 protocol resolves this problem, eliminating unnecessary buffer copying. Testing showed significant performance improvements, with higher FPS in applications like vkcube and Cyberpunk 2077.

  • Support added for resizing and changing resolution of the virtual screen used for screencasts, previously fixed at 1920×1080.

  • Added support for changing from floating panel mode scripts.

  • Recognition of special keys for calls in KWin was added.

  • The emoji selection interface now allows for icon size scaling, as implemented.

  • The screen layout configurator now offers pixel-by-pixel adjustments using cursor keys, as seen in this update.
