NetBSD 11.0 has been released, introducing a new version of the operating system that supports 61 system architectures and 16 CPU families. Apart from its portability and wide hardware platform support, NetBSD offers features such as hypervisor NVMM, firewall NPF, package manager pkgin, package repository pkgsrc, integrity control mechanism veriexec, W^X memory mode, ZFS support, and disk encryption with cgd. Installation images of 640 MB have been prepared for 59 architectures, excluding epoc32 and ia64.
The project focuses on 8 primary ports including amd64, i386, evbarm, evbmips, evbppc, hpcarm, sparc64, and xen, along with 49 secondary ports related to CPUs like alpha, hppa, m68010, m68k, sh3, sparc, and vax. Secondary ports, which have become less relevant or lack developer interest, are still supported but may be removed in the future. The acorn26 port falls into the category of broken ports that may be discontinued if there is no interest from enthusiasts.
Main improvements in NetBSD 11.0 include a new port for the RISC-V processor architecture, enhanced compatibility for libpthread and libc libraries, additions of various functions, expanded Linux compatibility layer with additional system call support, implementation of a fast-loading kernel MICROVM for i386 and amd64 systems, upgraded packet filter npf with new filtering capabilities, and initial support for Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite and Qualcomm Oryon platforms.
