For the football amateur viewer, passion has a price: that of the compulsory subscription to a channel or a paid platform. Or rather with others. Whether it is the French Ligue 1 (Amazon Prime Video, Canal+), foreign championships, such as the German Bundesliga, the Spanish Liga, the Italian Serie A (BeIN Sports), the English Premier League (Canal+) or European cuts (Canal+, Bein Sports, RMC Sport), you have to go to the checkout.

only remain visible for free the meetings of the French team (TF1, M6). Without forgetting a Ligue 2 match a day, thanks to the L’Equipe channel. A free channel which offered, the 2021-2022 season, a very appreciated multiplex Ligue 2, but that the paid platform Amazon Prime Video has recovered this season, thus limiting the free football offer a little more.

After more than two months of absence, Ligue 1 therefore resumes its place on the screens, with 80 % of the meetings scheduled on Amazon Prime Video (Annual Amazon Prime Subscription at 69 euros + Ligue 1 to 99 euros per year ) and two meetings per day offered on the channels of the Canal+group. Since its birth, in November 1984, Canal+ was, in fact, the “historic” partner of the French championship. But that was before. With the arrival on the French market of Amazon Prime Video, the situation has changed.

major calling product

The now limited offer of Canal+ concerning Ligue 1 (a match on Saturday evening, another Sunday at 5 p.m.) does not mean a disengagement from the group vis-à-vis the most popular sport, also attractive in terms of hears that are ones concerning the diffusion rights. At the end of June, Maxime Saada, boss of Canal+, announced that he had acquired all of the rights to the three European competitions (Champions League, Europa League, Europa League), for the period 2024-2027. An operation estimated at around 480 million euros.

The soap opera Ligue 1, presented for years as the major call for Canal+, is therefore replaced by the soap opera League. A strategy that can be explained by the high hearings recorded last season, during European evenings (1.6 million viewers on average) while Ligue 1 attracted only 553,000 faithful on average. “The Champions League is the quintessence of our strategy: to propose the best of each discipline, sums up Maxime Saada. This competition also comes at the top of the satisfaction of our subscribers and as motivation to the subscription with commitment.” An argument that n ‘will undoubtedly not prevent Canal+ from presenting, in a few months, a new offer for the rights of Ligue 1 concerning the period 2024-2028.
