The Asahi project developers, working to port Linux onto Mac computers with ARM chips from Apple, have recently announced the official support for Apple M3 chips. This means that MacBook and iMac devices from the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max series are now supported. However, support for Mac Studio/M3 Ultra is not yet available.
The level of hardware support for Apple M3 is similar to that of M1 and M2 devices. This includes support for web cameras, built-in microphones, USB, Bluetooth, and accelerated video decoding in AV1 format. Some limitations include incomplete support for the display processor (DCP) and GPU, as well as reduced performance and power efficiency when using 3D acceleration. Due to the incomplete DCP support, the HDMI port on the MacBook is currently disabled, and there are issues with entering sleep mode.
