“French fractures”: environment, a major issue in concerns of French

To cope with climate change, 69 % of French people say they are ready to “depth their lifestyle”, provided that the efforts are precisely distributed, according to the tenth wave of the study carried out by Ipsos-Sopra Steria for “Le Monde”, the Jean-Jaurès Foundation and Cevipof.

A summer of extreme climatic events and a fall in energy tension have an impact on the state of opinion and do they modify the political field? Here are the teachings of the tenth wave of the “French fractures” barometer, carried out by Ipsos-Sopra Steria for Le Monde, the Jean-Jaurès Foundation and the Center for Political Research of Sciences Po (Cevipof). First of all, the environment is the priority of all and more than a few. Confirmation of all the surveys carried out this year, this is the second priority – cited by 34 % of panelists. The environment is far behind purchasing power (54 %), but clearly in front of the future of pensions and the health system (26 %), immigration (18 %) or security (18 %) .

Confirmation here again, this priority is widely shared whether one is a woman or a man, rich or poor, rural or urban and even young or old – 18-24 year olds are certainly more than 70s at Cite the environment as a priority (with a difference of almost 20 points) but, whatever age, the environment is the second priority.

There is now consensus on the reality of climate change, but only one majority agree on the causes of this change. French and international news has undoubtedly accelerated awareness: almost 90 % of French people consider that “we are experiencing climate change”. On the other hand, 61 % of French only share the consensus of the IPCC on the causes of this change, that is to say “mainly human activity”-the others considering in particular that it is a “natural phenomenon” (16 %) or that we “cannot know” (8 %).

This skepticism is cleaned: it is more the fact of the older ones (27 points apart between 18-24 year olds and those over 70 years old), less graduates (22 points of deviation between without diploma and bac + 5), but also far-right sympathizers (57 points apart between the sympathizers of Europe Ecologie-les Verts and the sympathizers of reconquest!).

not in the Technicism Béat

Another teaching: the French are awaiting in -depth changes. They are not in desperate fatalism: only 10 % believe that we “can do nothing” to fight against climate change. They are not in Béat technicalism: only 14 % think that the solution will come from scientific innovations. They are not more in violent activism: 73 % (but only 52 % of EELV sympathizers and 49 % of those of rebellious France) consider “unacceptable” violence during militant shares or demonstrations. Conversely, they are 68 %to plead for a deep change – whether it is our lifestyles (30 %), or the production methods of companies (38 %).
