US safety agency expands probe after massive complaints by Tesla owners

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA, under Department of Transportation ) for massive complaints about the touchscreens in Tesla vehicles.

Failure of the touchscreen were reported in approximately 159,000 cars, the agency said.

Failure of the touchscreen can result in loss of the rear camera image display when reverse gear is selected, resulting in reduced rear visibility when backing up, the agency’s report said. The touchscreen failure can also affect defogging ability and audible chimes relating to driver assistance technology, autopilot and turn signals.

The failure, according to complaints received, may be present in both Model S and Model X electric cars.
