Published distribution Fedora Asahi Remix 45, designed for installation on Mac computers equipped with ARM chips developed by the company Apple. Fedora Asahi Remix 45 is based on the Fedora Linux 45 package base and comes with the Calamares installer. Initially, the Asahi Linux distribution was developed on the basis of Arch Linux, but in 2023 it was transferred to the Fedora package base, which made it possible to focus efforts on reverse engineering and hardware support, and transfer the assembly of a ready-to-install distribution to the Fedora Asahi SIG.
Fedora Asahi Remix provides the ability to work on Apple Mac systems equipped with ARM chips of the Apple Silicon – M1, M2, M3 and M4 used on Mac Mini, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, Mac Studio, and iMac devices. On devices with M1, M2 and M3 chips, the following are fully supported: Apple computer audio, camera, microphone, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, input devices, USB Type C (USB 3.0) and MagSafe wireless charging. Not yet supported: screen connection via USB-C, Thunderbolt/USB4 and Touch ID.
KDE Plasma 6.8 is supplied as the main user environment, but an edition with GNOME 51 is optionally available, as well as a version for servers and a minimalist build. The KDE and GNOME editions use Wayland, and the XWayland DDX server is used to run X11 applications. Graphics drivers support OpenGL 4.6, OpenGL ES 3.2 and Vulkan 1.4 (native graphics drivers for Apple M1 chips only implement the OpenGL 4.1 specification).
To run applications built for systems in separate virtual machines x86_64, provided muvm toolkit and an emulation layer based on the FEX package. Emulation supports GPU forwarding and the use of Wine with DXVK and vkd3d-proton layers to run computer games built for the x86_64 architecture and distributed through the Steam catalog.
In addition to the changes inherent in the release of Fedora Linux 45, there is official support for Apple devices on M3 chips. The ability to work on MacBook and iMac devices of the M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max series is declared. The level of hardware support for the Apple M3 is close to that of the M1 and M2 devices. Functionality limitations on M3 systems include limited display processor (DCP) and GPU support, as well as poor performance and power efficiency when using 3D acceleration.
