Release Of Phosh 0.58, GNOME Environment For Smartphones

Published release of Phosh 0.58, a screen shell for mobile devices based on GNOME technologies and the GTK library. The environment was initially developed by Purism as an analogue of GNOME Shell for the Librem 5 smartphone, but then became one of the unofficial GNOME projects and is used in postmarketOS, Mobian, ALT Mobile, Droidian, some firmware for Pine64 devices and the Fedora edition for smartphones. Phosh uses a Phoc composite server running on top of Wayland, as well as its own on-screen keyboard. Project developments distributed under the GPLv3+ license.

Among changes:

  • In quick settings, the “caffeine” function, which blocks auto-shutdown of the screen, has been added with the ability to select methods to prevent activation of sleep mode and locking the screen.
  • The notification shown after taking a screenshot has added buttons for opening an image or viewing the contents of the directory in which the screenshot is saved.
  • Improved tracking of the launch of applications and flatpak packages that use a separate name for DBus.
  • In the phoc composite server has expanded support for the Wayland protocols text-input-v3 and layer-shell-effects to improve compatibility with GTK 4.24 and separate the movements of Wayland surfaces between the composite server and client. An interface has been added for drawing thumbnails, which made it possible to speed up their display on the screen.
  • The Stevia on-screen keyboard provides the ability to install dictionaries for autocompletion of input into the home directory.
  • The phosh-mobile-settings configurator simplifies filtering of panels and uses the logic for working with panels, as in the conf-tweaks application.
  • The first boot wizard (phosh-first-boot) provides options for customization minimum password and username size. When working with encrypted drives, the LUKS (Linux Unified Key Setup) backend from systemd-homed is enabled by default. Enabled adding a new user to the sudo group.
  • Gmobile, a set of handlers for running GNOME on mobile devices, has added support for the display bar used in the Google Pixel 3 XL. Support for Google Pixel 9a has been provided and processing of rounded corners of the Fairphone 5 smartphone screen has been improved.
  • The function of creating directories, as well as mounting and unmounting network partitions and SD cards has been added to the file saving widget.
