The non-profit organization Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation, which oversees the development of the Rocky Linux distribution, announced the creation of the OpenCourant project, which will continue the development of the open code base OpenRadioss platform after its transformation into a proprietary product. The project code will continue to be developed under the APGLv3 license by the community and managed by a non-profit foundation that is independent of individual vendors. Developers who were involved in the OpenRadioss project before its closure are invited to participate in the fork.
The OpenRadioss project code is written in Fortran and was opened in 2022. A few days ago, Siemens removed the OpenRadioss repository from GitHub, disabled the project’s website, and suggested users switch to the proprietary Simcenter Radioss product. OpenRadioss is designed to solve problems in continuum mechanics, such as calculating the strength of engineering structures in highly nonlinear problems associated with large plastic deformations of the medium under study. The code is primarily written in Fortran and supports Linux and Windows. The problems solved by the project include the problems of metal forming and sheet stamping, as well as the simulation of fast processes and fluid and gas mechanics.
