Ministry Interior and Kingdom Affairs of the Netherlands is developing a project DAWO (Digitaal Autonome Werkomgeving Overheid), aimed at creating a sovereign working environment for government agencies, promoted to eliminate dependence on foreign technology corporations. The Linux distribution NixOS was selected as the operating system for workstations . Three state IT companies are involved in the development of the project – DICTU, SSC-ICT and DUO-ICT. The first stable release of DAWO is expected next year. Currently, four municipalities are participating in the pilot implementation of the platform. The developments are published on state platform of joint development, created on the basis of Forgejo, and is mirrored in Codeberg.
The DAWO platform is formed by several components:
- Operating system DAWO-NixOS based on NixOS (there is a separate backup option on Fedora Kinoite).
- Cloud infrastructure DAWO-Cloud.
- Collaboration tools MijnBureau based on Nextcloud, Collabora, Element and OpenProject.
- Identification and access management system DAWO-IAM.
- Tools for centralized deployment and management of workstations DAWO-Sextant. To manage mobile devices, they plan to use Fleet.
- Mobile platform DAWO-Mobile, for which /e/OS, GrapheneOS and CalyxOS.
- AI assistant DAWO-AI.
