Following a recent restart in development, the repository of the Nitter project, a platform that offers an alternative way to view messages from the social network X (Twitter) without needing to create an account, has once again been moved to archived mode and the website has been taken down. Additionally, the service XCancel, which provided similar functionality, has also ceased operations. However, independent proxies based on the Nitter platform and redirection services to working proxies like nitt.tr, twit.0r.cx, and xxcancel.com, continue to be operational thanks to the efforts of enthusiasts.
The Nitter project, which is committed to developing a free (GPLv3) frontend for accessing X.com without including JavaScript, analytics, trackers, and third-party services, has been revived from archived mode. The project was initially shut down in late August after receiving a notice from X Corp demanding that it cease its activities that were deemed illegal. The notice cited violations of U.S. state and federal laws, including the Texas Computer Harmful Computer Access Act (§ 143.001 and § 33.02) and the Lanham Trademark Act (15 U.S.C. §§ 1114, 1125). Nitter was accused of unlawfully accessing the X.com API and associated data, as well as breaching the service’s regulations by gaining access to X accounts and session tokens.
