Recently, Andrea Brancaleoni, a maintainer of the Void Linux distribution, made the decision to stop maintaining 113 packages in response to the use of artificial intelligence tools for analyzing changes and performing routine tasks. This decision was communicated in a reply to an intolerance application on GitHub. The packages that remain unmaintained include alacritty, arpwatch, asus-kbd-backlight, clementine, docker-cli, etcd, flint, forego, fscrypt, kubernetes, libguestfs, libnfc, moby, openresolv, packer, racket, rancher-compose, terraform, thermald, trollock, ttf-ubuntu-font-family, vagrant, and virt-manager.
Two days prior to this announcement, Andrea had published statistics on GitHub regarding the compatibility of packages with the new version of the Go programming language. The list highlighted packages that faced issues during the build process after the toolkit was updated. It also contained an analysis of the changes in Go that contributed to these problems. In response to a question from a member of the Void Core Team regarding the preparation of the comparison, Andrea revealed that he used standard tools alongside the OpenCode AI agent and the AI model GLM-5.3-flash.
However, a member of the Void Core Team voiced concerns about the use of AI-generated text, referencing the project rules which emphasize that only changes made by humans should be accepted. The rules permit the use of AI tools solely for research and education purposes, and stress that content like code, documentation, issue reports, comments, and pull request descriptions must be authored by individuals who comprehend the material.
In response to these concerns, Andrea defended the comparison he submitted, asserting its clarity and accuracy. Nevertheless, the rules were clear that AI-generated text was not permissible, regardless of the source’s confidence in its validity. Following this exchange, Andrea acknowledged the rules with a thumbs-up emoji and removed himself from the list of contributors involved in the discussion.
