The latest release of the lightweight distribution MX Linux 25.2 has been published, a collaborative effort between the communities of antiX and MEPIS. This release is built on the Debian package base with enhancements from the antiX project and packages from its own repository. Users have the option to choose between using sysVinit and systemd as initialization systems, with in-house tools provided for system configuration and deployment.
Users can now download 64-bit builds (x86_64) with Xfce desktop (3 GB), KDE desktop (3.6 GB), and Fluxbox window manager (2.4 GB) from the official MX Linux website. The MX Installer installer has been updated to include a fully functional text interface (minstall –tui) for installation management without the need to switch to graphical mode. Additionally, systemd units have been added for the oobe/oem mode used in the Raspberry Pi edition.
Notable updates in this release include synchronization with the Debian 13.5 package database and updating the Linux kernel to version 6.12.90. Furthermore, advanced hardware support (AHS) builds have been updated with Xfce, kernel 7.0 with patches from the liquorix project, and Mesa 26.0.1.
The Live mode booting system has been redesigned, extracting initial setup functions from the rc.local script. The live-kernel-updater application has also been improved to allow for simultaneous installation of multiple kernels. When installed from the uc-tool-mx repository, the MX Snapshot and live-kernel-updater utilities now support live systems with microcode-enabled settings.
