Devuan 6.1 Released: Debian Fork Minus Systemd

Introduced the release of Devuan 6.1 “Excalibur”, a fork of Debian GNU/Linux, supplied without the systemd system manager. To download prepared Live builds with Xfce desktop environment (1.7 GB and 879 MB) and installation iso images (4.2 GB, 593 MB) for amd64 architecture. Packages are built for i386, amd64, armel, armhf, arm64, ppc64el and riscv64 architectures. It is proposed to create images for ARM systems and virtual machines yourself using the arm-sdk and vm-sdk tools.

The project supports branches for about 400 Debian packages, which are modified to get rid of bindings to systemd, rebranding or adapting to the features of the Devuan infrastructure. Two packages (devuan-baseconf, jenkins-debian-glue-buildenv-devuan)
are present only in Devuan and are associated with setting up repositories and operating the build system. Devuan is otherwise fully compatible with Debian and can be used as a basis for creating custom builds of Debian without systemd. Devuan-specific packages can be downloaded from packages.devuan.org.

The default desktop is based on Xfce 4.20 and the Slim display manager. Optionally available for installation are KDE, MATE, Cinnamon, LXQt and Sway. Instead of systemd, the classic initialization system SysVinit is supplied, as well as optional systems openrc and runit. It is possible to work without D-Bus, which allows you to create minimalistic desktop configurations based on blackbox, fluxbox, fvwm, fvwm-crystal and openbox window managers. To configure the network, a variant of the NetworkManager configurator is offered, which is not tied to systemd. Instead of systemd-udev, eudev is used, a fork of udev from the Gentoo project. Xfce and MATE use consolekit to manage user sessions, while the rest of the desktops use elogind, a variant of logind that is not tied to systemd.

Changes in Devuan 6.1 are mainly limited to synchronization with the Debian package base 13.2, as well as supporting work with the initialization systems sysvinit, runit and OpenRC. Fixed several problems
