Russia mulling to control prices for food in a new way

The Federation Council wanted to create a commission to develop new measures to regulate prices for products. Such a proposal was made by Senator Evgeny Savchenko, reports RIA Novosti.

“I propose to create a commission to develop legislative measures to regulate prices in the domestic market, regardless of the change in world prices,” said the parliamentarian and stressed that often the cost of goods of essentials in Russia depends on external reasons, since the domestic market is poorly protected from world trends. Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko has already shown the view that the commission could lead the Vice-Speaker of the Council of State Andrei Yartkin.

Earlier in November, the entrepreneur and the owner of Crocus Group Araz Agalarov said that controlling prices for food in the networks of stores is useless. According to a businessman, all trading platforms compete among themselves and increase prices only because they buy goods from producers more expensive. Those, in turn, increase the cost of products due to the rise in price of transportation and fertilizer.

According to Rosstat, inflation in October reached 8.13 percent in annual terms. Food, especially fruits and vegetables, have risen in price. Rising prices for food, according to the central bank, is due to the poor harvest this year. According to the regulator forecasts, food inflation may continue to grow in the first half of 2022.
