Russia prepares to replace ambassador to Belarus

Russian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Latvia Yevgeny Lukyanov may be reappointed to the post of ambassador to Belarus instead of Dmitry Mezentsev, who has held this post for the past four years. Kommersant reported on the impending replacement in the Russian diplomatic mission, citing three informed sources.

According to the newspaper, the candidacy of 69-year-old Lukyanov has already been agreed, and the decree on his appointment will be signed in the near future. The decision on a new transfer of the diplomat was made based on his experience in the Security Council of the Russian Federation and the banking sector, sources say.

In turn, the further fate of Mezentsev in the present remains unknown. No upcoming appointments or retirement have been announced.

Yevgeny Lukyanov began his diplomatic career in 2016. From 2012 to 2016, he held the post of Assistant Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, and from 1993 to 2006 he was in senior positions at Dresdner Bank and VTB. Educated at the Zhdanov Leningrad State University with a degree in English language and literature.
