LiberNT Project Is Developing ReactOS Fork Aimed At Compatibility With Windows 11

As part of the LiberNT project, a fork of the operating system ReactOS was created, aimed at achieving compatibility with applications and drivers for Windows 11 24H2, styling the appearance for modern Windows and supporting 64-bit hardware platforms, including systems based on ARM64, PowerPC and RISC-V 64. A distinctive feature of the fork is also the active use of AI tools during development. LiberNT’s own developments are distributed under the GPLv3 license, but code borrowed from ReactOS continues to be supplied under the GPLv2+ license. The main boot assemblies generated for x86_64 and ARM64 systems, additionally experimental assemblies for PowerPC and RISC-V 64 (Banana Pi BPI-F3) are published.

Among the achievements project:

  • Implementation of support for running on ARM boards Raspberry Pi 3 and Raspberry Pi 5, including drivers for the GPU, audio subsystem and network adapter.
  • Using the new NVS memory management system, which, according to the developers, works faster than the version from ReactOS.
  • Support for running Windows applications, compiled for x86 architecture, on systems with ARM64 architecture (using the FEX emulator).
  • More modern graphics drivers that use the WDDM driver architecture and support hardware acceleration for OpenGL. New drivers are currently available for Raspberry Pi 5 and 3 boards, and are being implemented for Intel and AMD GPUs.
  • New stack for storage and USB, including new drivers for NVMe devices, USB 3.0, SD cards, network devices and game controllers (supported PlayStation 5 DualSense, PlayStation 5 DualSense Edge and Xbox Series X|S). New driver for NTFS file system.
