Introduced release of the free distribution OpenIndiana 2026.10, which replaced the OpenSolaris distribution, the development of which was discontinued by Oracle. OpenIndiana provides the user with a working environment built on a fresh slice of the Illumos project code base. The actual development of OpenSolaris technologies continues with the Illumos project, which develops the kernel, network stack, file systems, drivers, as well as a basic set of user system utilities and libraries. To download generated three types of iso images – server edition with console applications (594 MB), minimal assembly (543 MB) and assembly with the MATE graphical environment (2.5 GB).
Main changes in OpenIndiana 2026.10:
- Live builds now support UEFI framebuffer and include the X.org illumosfb driver. Enabled automatic configuration of framebuffer-based consoles.
- Updated 644 packages.
- Updated custom components, including Firefox 159, Thunderbird 159, GIMP 3.2.6, inkscape 1.4.4, librecad 2.2.1.6, MATE 1.28.3, nvidia drv 580.178.04

In addition, published the release of the distribution kit OmniOS Community Edition r151060, based on developments the Illumos project, which continues the development of the OpenSolaris kernel, network stack, file systems, drivers, libraries and a basic set of system utilities. OmniOS is notable for providing support for the bhyve and KVM hypervisors, the Crossbow virtual networking stack, the ZFS file system, and lightweight Linux container launchers. The distribution can be used for building scalable web systems, virtualization and creating storage systems.
Among the changes in the new release:
- The performance of the IPS package management system has been optimized, which has reduced the startup time of the utility pkg, reduce memory consumption and speed up package installation and removal operations. Changes have been made to the format of the database with information about packages (to convert old files to the new format, you need to run the “pkg update-format” command).
- The NFS server has added support for delegation of directory operations to the client (directory delegation), which allows you to perform operations for a certain time without checking for state changes on the server.
