Published a new version of the distribution kit PorteuX 2.8, based on Slackware and developed under the influence of the Slax and Porteus projects. From features, PorteuX notes the presence of pre-configured environments based on the Cinnamon, COSMIC, GNOME, KDE, LXDE, LXQt, MATE and Xfce desktops, the inclusion of hardware acceleration for processing multimedia files on Intel, AMD and NVIDIA GPUs, loading in Live mode for 3 seconds, system image in read-only mode with additional installation of applications from the PorteuX App Store catalog, support for rollback of update installations, boot mode to RAM (copy2ram) and the ability to boot over the network. The project generated 8 assemblies, ranging in size from 577 to 759 MB.
Key changes:
- To organize the work of a multi-layer file system, allowing combine several directories into a single virtual file system, instead of aufs by default, the project aufs-ng, developed from scratch by PorteuX developers, is used. Aufs-ng supports the same disk format and set of options as aufs, but uses more modern Linux kernel subsystems, which have reduced the number of global locks and speeded up copy operations.
- In Xfce, instead of the xfwm4 window manager, an X11-based session uses its own fork xfwm4-gl, translated to use OpenGL for rendering (if there is no OpenGL support, it falls back to XRender). Using xfwm4-gl made it possible to increase rendering performance by approximately 10%, reduce power consumption, provide support for adaptive vsync enablement, and disable compositing when running applications in full screen mode. In a Wayland-based session Xfce continues to use the labwc composite manager.
