The developers of the Linux Mint distribution have published updated iso images that come with a newer version of the Linux kernel. The release of Linux Mint 22.3, which originally shipped with kernel 6.14, has been updated with an HWE (Hardware Enablement) update containing kernel version 7.0 ported from Ubuntu 26.04 and prepared for inclusion in Ubuntu 26.04.5 LTS. This move is aimed at addressing user issues related to supporting new equipment, amidst an extended release preparation cycle that now targets the end of December 2026 instead of the beginning of September.
Moreover, the Linux Mint developers have unveiled a new interface for managing packages with the Linux kernel. This interface will replace the old tools integrated into the Update Manager. The new implementation supports both Linux Mint and LMDE, focusing on managing series of kernels rather than individual ones. Users can specify which kernel series to monitor and how many old versions to retain in the system. When installing a kernel update, older versions will be automatically removed based on the specified settings. Additionally, users have access to manually initiate the removal of old kernels and view the history of deleted versions.
