MySQL Unveils Community-Driven Governance Model

Heather VanCura, Oracle VP Community Engagement, introduced the second phase of the initiative to connect with the community and accelerate MySQL development. This phase aims to involve community representatives in development, with goals including accelerating innovation, providing clear paths for communicating change, and expanding the MySQL ecosystem.

To achieve this, a Steering Committee has been established, which includes representatives from the community to set MySQL’s development strategy and act as a liaison to the MySQL ecosystem. Initial members of the committee come from Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud, alongside Oracle employees.

The committee’s focus areas include setting long-term development priorities, expanding the ecosystem, modernizing project management, engaging the community in development, and receiving community feedback. However, the committee does not replace technical leadership or interfere with day-to-day development processes.

A new governance model is also proposed to involve community representatives, which defines roles such as contributors, committers, project leads, core project lead, and a vulnerability group. This model was developed based on discussions at the MySQL Contributor Summit, with participation from organizations like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, Percona, ProxySQL, Readyset, VillageSQL, and the MariaDB Foundation.
