Coreboot 26.06 Launches as Open Firmware Alternative

The CoreBoot project has announced the release of CoreBoot 26.06, a free alternative to proprietary firmware and BIOS. The project’s code is distributed under the GPLv2 license. The new version includes 1163 changes, prepared with the participation of 101 developers, with 22 of them contributing to the development for the first time.

Some of the main changes in the CoreBoot 26.06 release include:

  • Support for 31 new motherboards, including models from AMD, ASRock, ASUS, Framework, Lenovo, Star Labs, System76, as well as boards used in various devices with Chrome OS or on Google servers.
  • Discontinued support for AMD Crater Renoir motherboards and Google Myst.
  • Added initial support for Intel Nova Lake (NVL) SoC, with implemented bootblock, romstage, ramstage, FSP-M, and FSP-S (Firmware Support Package).
  • Added initial support for Intel Panther Lake (PTL) SoC, with inline-encryption for UFS.
  • Added initial support for AMD Strix Halo SoC, with a boot demonstration on the AMD Maple motherboard.
  • Added initial support for Qualcomm Calypso SoC and Google Calypso, Mensa, and C1nv motherboards, with various firmware loading capabilities.
  • For AMD chips, support for the ROM Armor mechanism has been added for protection against unauthorized modifications to the system SPI Flash.
  • For AMD chips, support for the A/B Recovery mechanism has been implemented for ensuring firmware backup and boot options in case of failures.
