Microsoft has recently made a significant contribution to the open-source community by releasing the source code of the 86-DOS operating systems 1.00 and PC-DOS 1.00 under the MIT license. This release also includes the runtime libraries of the Microsoft BASIC-86 compiler, SCP assembler, CHKDSK, and EDLIN utilities.
PC-DOS 1.00 holds historical significance as it was the first DOS release for the IBM PC. The code for these operating systems was recovered as part of a meticulous project aimed at reconstructing the early versions of DOS for the 8086 CPU. This involved scanning and transcribing archival paper printouts dating back to 1981 and 1982.
