Gentoo Completes Initial Shift from GitHub to Codeberg

The developers of the Gentoo distribution announced a new feature allowing changes to be transferred to the ebuild repository using the Git hosting platform Codeberg. Codeberg also hosts mirrors for the development of portage, steve, and gentoolkit. This support on Codeberg has been added alongside the previously utilized GitHub platform, with plans to gradually transition the change transfer process to Codeberg in the future. The main reason for this shift away from GitHub is the introduction of the Copilot AI service.

Codeberg’s Git hosting is based on the collaborative development platform Forgejo, known for its low resource consumption and easy installation process, making it suitable for use on inexpensive VPS setups. Project management functionalities offered by Forgejo include task management, issue tracking, pull requests, wikis, team coordination tools, release preparation, package repository automation, access rights management, integration with continuous integration platforms, code search, LDAP and OAuth authentication, SSH and HTTP/HTTPS repository access, web hooks for integration with services like Slack and Discord, Git hooks and Git LFS support, and repository migration and mirroring tools.
