Cosmic Desktop and Alpine Support Added

The developers of the postmarketos project, working on a Linux distribution for smartphones based on Alpine Linux, MUSL libc, and Busybox, have announced the addition of support for the Cosmic environment desktop developed in the Rust language. Postmarketos builds with Cosmic are now available for x86_64 systems, with a separate version optimized for ThinkPad X13S laptops. Users can also customize their assemblies using the pMBOTSTRAP utility. Previously, Postmarketos offered support for KDE Plasma Mobile, Phosh, GNOME Mobile, Sxmo, Mate, and Xfce.

Cosmic, developed by System76 as a universal project following Freedesktop specifications, uses the id library for its interface, which features safe types, modular architecture, and reactive programming. The project also includes its composite server cosmic-comp based on Wayland. Besides Rust, Cosmic offers features like hybrid mosaic window layout and window grouping, set for inclusion in the virtual desktop. The first stable release of Cosmic is planned for Q1 2025.

In other updates, Postmarketos now supports Samsung Galaxy S10+, Amlogic P241, Microsoft Lumia 640, and Ugoos AM3 devices. Camera support was added for ONEPLUS 6, Motorola Moto E5 Plus, and more. Enhanced support is also available for Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, Google Pixel 3a XL, LG G7 ThinQ, and other devices. The repository now includes GNOME 48 and KDE Plasma Mobile with Dolphin as the file manager. The mobile-config-firefox package for Firefox on
