Git hosting platform Codeberg, which utilizes the free collaborative development platform Forgejo, recently implemented a significant change to its rules. This change, as announced, now prohibits the hosting of projects where the majority of the code is created using generative AI models, including popular AI services like Claude and Codex.
The decision to enforce this ban was reached after a voting process involving members of the community who are part of the non-profit organization Codeberg e.V.. Out of the 516 participants who took part, 358 voted in favor of the ban, while 144 voted against it. Additionally, 14 members opted to abstain from voting. The primary concerns that prompted this decision were the unclear legal status of AI-generated code and the potential risks associated with the inclusion of unsafe code.
