FEDORA LINUX 40 UNVEILS NEW FEATURES

Developers at Fedora have recently released a stable version of Fedora Linux 40, which includes a distribution as well as a live assembly with various desktop environments. This distribution is now available for X86_64, Power64, and ARM64 (AARCH64) architectures. There was a slight delay in issuing Fedora Silverblue.

Some of the key updates in this release are:

  1. Fedora Workstation now runs GNOME desktop version 46, bringing enhancements like a global search feature, improved file manager and terminal emulators productivity, experimental Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support, improved external services interaction, updated configurator and notification system, and a new drawing engine based on the VULKAN API for GTK.
  2. Fedora KDE has transitioned to KDE 6 with Wayland, discontinuing support for X11-based sessions. However, users can return to X11 by installing the Plasma-workspace-X11 package. XWayland is utilized to launch X11 applications on Wayland.
  3. The Fedora project has consolidated its atomic distributions under the new Atomic Desktops brand, maintaining the names of Fedora Silverblue, Fedora Kinoite, Fedora CoreOS, and Fedora IoT. Additionally, new builds like Fedora Sway Atomic and Fedora Budgie Atomic have been introduced.
Updates include latest versions of various tools such as LLVM 18, GCC 14, Binutils 2.41, Glibc 2.39, GDB 14.1, PHP 8.3, Ruby 3.22, Java 21, AMD ROCM 6, Boost 1.83, PostgreSQL 16, Kubernetes 1.29, and more. Various changes like activating the IPV4 address conflict detection mechanism and restructuring packets for Kubernetes have been implemented.
  4. A new loading system called UKI has been introduced, allowing for the verification of the integrity and accuracy of the kernel and InitRD during the boot process via UEFI. This aims to enhance security and simplify the booting process.
