Legislative 2022: abstention remains first “party” in France

With 46.23 %, participation is at the lowest in the second round of the legislative elections. This strong abstention has its comfort zones, its voice tanks and its voting profiles

As in 2017, abstention confirms his rank as a winner of the legislative elections. Even before the multiple disappointments of the coalition as the surprise triumph of the National Rally (RN) and the halftone breakthrough of the new Ecological and Social People’s Union (Nuts), participation, which rises in the second round in 46, 23 % of the registrants, continues to obtain ballot after ballot the scope of these elections however decisive for national policy.

It is almost a habit in the overseas territories, Saint-Barthélemy is the department where we voted in the second round, with 75.44 % abstention. In metropolitan France, it was the Seine-Saint-Denis that deserted the urns the most, with 63.39 % abstention. La Lozère, one of the most anchored departments in its civic tradition, manages to lower the trend with an abstention that caps at 40.78 %. In the Wallis-et-Futuna archipelago, abstention only reaches 21.54 % of registrants.

The 2017 legislative elections had led to an unprecedented renewal of the hemicycle. No less than 434 new elected officials had entered the Palais-Bourbon. The brewing is lower at the end of this ballot but is nevertheless located in the high waters, since these are 302 new faces with which agents of the National Assembly – and parliamentary journalists – will have to learn to familiarize themselves.

Logic of useful vote

The largest contingent of these neophytes is provided by the RN, which has 84, for a total of 89 elected officials. La France Insoumise (LFI) is the second supplier, with 62 new entrants for a total of 75 elected officials. Number of first-candidates had been invested by La République en Marche (LRM): 47 of them were, as of Monday, June 20, take possession of the case containing the insignia of their function. They thus join their 107 re -elected colleagues.

Conversely, 99 outgoing deputies were beaten. The greatest number is obviously at LRM, 73 out of which have lost. As well as 9 representatives of the modem and 5 outgoing invested under the colors of the horizons. A total of 87 deputies from the presidential majority were not renewed. Although the Les Républicains Party (LR) has greatly benefited from the territorial establishment of its candidates, 7 of them still go to the hatch. Note that, for 11 of these non -re -elected leavers, the result was played at less than 1 % of the vote and, for 16 others, at less than 2 %. Low gap devices that could lead to a significant number of appeals.
