France is preparing for a very early heat wave from Tuesday

Between Thursday and Saturday, very high temperatures, from 35 ° C to 38 ° C, are expected over the southern half, and the mercury could even brush the 40 ° C locally. Minimum temperatures should not descend under 20 ° C during the night.

Summer has not yet started that the hot weather is already there. A particularly early “heat wave” is expected over the southern half of the country from the middle of the week, warned Météo-France, Sunday June 12.

This “extremely early” heat wave, linked to a localized depression between the Azores and Madeira, which promotes hot air lifts on Western Europe, should arrive on Tuesday evening on the extreme south of the country , before expanding on Wednesday to the whole of the southern half, told the France-Presse Frédéric Nathan agency, forecaster at Météo-France.

forecasts do not allow at present to say that this episode will be formally a heat wave, which meets precise criteria (period of intense and durable heat, day and night, over a prolonged period greater than three days in general). It is however possible that the heat wave threshold is reached, or even exceeded, in certain departments, according to Météo-France.

The extension of this heat wave to the northern half of the country is still uncertain, but there should also be a “hot flagship”, according to Frédéric Nathan, which notably evokes the possibility that the mercury reaches 35 ° C in Paris Friday or Saturday.

The multiplication and intensification of heat waves and heat waves are the most obvious manifestations of climate change caused by human activities. France has experienced several exceptional heat waves since the beginning of the XXI century, notably that of summer 2003, or that of June 2019 when the absolute heat record in mainland France had been recorded in Vérargues (Hérault), with 46 ° C.

“A very worrying situation”

The heat wave of this week occurs after a particularly warm and dry spring, which caused a large part of hexagon a drought of the soils, which makes fear for the harvests.

Despite the rains recorded during last week on a part of the territory, “we remain in a very worrying situation, with extremely dry soils, and that will not arrange the situation,” noted the forecaster. p>

In this context, more and more departments are implementing restrictions on water use. As of June 12, thirty-five departments had taken orders in this sense, according to the official site Propluvia, against twenty-two ten days ago.
