Iraqi Prime Minister escapes an attack

The drone attack is attributed to Shiite factions related to Iran, which dispute the result of the October vote.

A bandage to the left arm and the traits drawn, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, launched a call to calm and restraint in a video broadcast on Twitter, on the night of Saturday 6th to Sunday, November 7th , after an attempt at assassination that he came out unscathed. “The coward attacks of rockets and drones do neither build nor a future,” he denounced. Shortly earlier, a trapped drone had exploded in his residence, in the “green zone” of Baghdad, the ultraprocated district of the Iraqi capital which welcomes the public institutions and the embassies, making several wounded in his closer guard. Two other drones have been slaughtered, have reported safe sources.

The assassination attempt generated a wave of convictions in the country and abroad. Many Iraq partners have denounced a “terrorist attack”, like the US President Joe Biden. “I am relieved that the Prime Minister was not injured and welcomed the leadership he demonstrated by calming the restraint and dialogue to protect the institutions of the State and strengthen the democracy that Iraqis deserve So much, “he said, promising assistance to the Iraqi authorities as part of their investigation. By the voice of the Quai d’Orsay, France rejected “all forms of destabilization of the country, violence and intimidation”, while the countries of the region unanimously condemned the operation, including Iran, which called for “vigilance to thwart the plots aimed at security” in Iraq, in an allusion to the United States, their great rival.

“You can not accept that Iraq is plunged into chaos and that a shot is conducted against the constitutional order,” said Tweet Iraqi President Barham Saleh. If the attack has not been claimed, the suspicions are on Shiite armed factions related to Iran, which dispute the result of the October 10 legislative elections, during which their political representatives have suffered a serious setback. “We know them and we will unveil their identity,” Prime Minister promised Sunday night.

These factions have, for a year, systematized the use of armed drones in their attacks against American interests in Iraq. Some of them cultivate a brief distrust of Mustafa al-Kadhimi, since it was too close to the United States, since it accessed power in May 2020. Several attempts by the Prime Minister to pursue the authors of anti-US attacks or murders against protesters, in the wake of the October 2019 antipoute protest movement, faced the Shiite militia’s force demonstrations.
