Mothers in Malaysia defended in court right to give citizenship to their children

Six mothers from Malaysia defended the right to give citizenship to their children born abroad. This is reported by Bloomberg with reference to the Malaysian media.

The process lasts from December 2020. Malaysianks appealed to the High Court of Kuala Lumpur, as the law adopted in the country ten years ago did not allow them to transfer citizenship to their children born in another country. This right, according to the decision of the authorities, belongs only to men Malaysia.

The court ruled that women automatically have the same rights with the male population of the country, so their children can receive Malaysian citizenship. Activists of the Family Frontiers organization, who helped women in court, said that the published solution was a “monumental step towards gender equality.”

Judge Aktar Tahir admitted that the law of a decade ago contains points that discriminate women. It also contradicts another act that prohibits any infringement in the rights of gender. At the same time, the Government of Malaysia stated that the court had no jurisdiction to consider this case, as it concerns the legislation on citizenship.
