China for first time declared a high level of radiation at Tanshhan NPP

China’s authorities for the first time declared a high level of radiation at the first power unit of the nuclear power plant (NPP) “Tanshhan” in Guangdong Province. This is reported by TASS.

It is noted that the reason for increasing radiation indicators could be damage to the fuel rods. Beijing stressed that small breakdowns are inevitable because of the influence of various factors, including the features of the manufacture of fuel, as well as the process of transportation and loading.

The authorities of the country told that five rods were damaged at the station – so far it does not exceed the norm. “NPP still steadily operates within the limits established in technical regulations, regulatory requirements are executed, the station’s operational safety is also provided,” the statement said.

Tanshan NPP includes two power units with a capacity of 1750 MW, which were commissioned in 2018 and 2019. On June 14, CNN TV channel reported that the US government received information about the possible leakage of radioactive fuel from the station. The American authorities did not consider the situation dangerous for the employees of the NPP or the population of China.
