NASA teach astronauts to wash clothes in space

NASA has merged with a large producer of washing powder to develop clothing washing methods in space. About it reports The Associated Press.

Currently, astronauts at the International Space Station (ISS) wear underwear and clothing until things come into disrepair due to dirt and unpleasant odor, and then throw away. NASA also intends to teach them to care for clothes. Together with a major powder manufacturer, the Agency expects to find a method for cleaning clothes in space so that it can be used again for several months or even years, as on Earth.

So, at the end of this year, NASA plans to send several sets with means for washing. Since December 2021, scientists will observe how enzymes and other ingredients react by six months of weightlessness. Then, in May 2022, astronauts will deliver means for removing stains and napkins.

At the same time, the manufacturer’s digging is developing a combined washing and drying machine that could work on the moon or on Mars using the minimum amount of water and detergent. Such a car may also be useful in dry regions of the Earth.

Previously, astronauts on the ISS complained about the migraine and aroused disputes between scientists about the reasons for her occurrence, disputes called. The Americans are confident that the migraine is caused by the increased content of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere of the station. Their Russian colleagues do not agree with this and confident that the pain is caused by the influence of weightlessness.
