Hyundai to recall tens of thousands of electric vehicles due to fire risk

The car manufacturer Hyundai Motor Co. plans to recall 81,700 electric vehicles around the world due to the danger of a battery fire, writes Yonhap News Agency.

The company wants to replace the battery management system in 75,680 Kona cars, 5716 Ioniqs and 305 electric buses. The batteries were manufactured by a subsidiary of LG. The risk of fire is associated with malfunctions in the battery management system during fast charging. Car recall will cost the carmaker $ 899 million.

Hyundai plans to share costs with the battery manufacturer. Against the backdrop of these events, Hyundai shares fell 3.9 percent. The automaker recalled tens of thousands of Kona electric vehicles last October due to software bugs.

Earlier, tens of thousands of potentially dangerous sold Toyota and Lexus vehicles began to be withdrawn from Russia. A defect was found in the machines that could lead to a short circuit and fire.
