WHO announced expansion of geography of distribution of new strains of COVID-19

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the coronavirus strain detected in the UK was identified last week in six more countries, and their total number reached 86. TASS reports.

In addition, the geography of the distribution of strains identified in South Africa, Brazil and Japan has expanded. The South African type of COVID-19 as of February 8 was detected in 44 states, over the past week there were three more. The Japanese strain spread over seven days in five new states, and now there are 15.

Earlier, the Director of the Regional Office for Europe of the World Health Organization (WHO) Hans Kluge said that with the advent of vaccines against coronavirus, the world is faced with a paradoxical situation. According to him, on the one hand, the start of vaccination gives the world hope for an early end to the pandemic. At the same time, new, often more contagious mutations of the virus are emerging, which leads to tougher restrictive measures.

According to the latest data, 106.8 million cases of coronavirus infection have been recorded all over the world. 2.3 million people have died from complications from the disease.
