Russia has proposed to introduce duties on steel to reduce housing prices

The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) proposed to introduce export duties on steel products for six months in order to lower house prices. This was announced by the deputy head of the service Andrei Tsarikovsky in a letter to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, RBC reports citing a copy of the document.

Tsarikovsky proposed introducing a regressive system of duties: on scrap – 15 percent of the cost, on steel billets – 13 percent, and on finished rebar – 12 percent. At the same time, the minimum collection thresholds are set – $ 49 (or 45 euros), $ 73 and $ 78 per ton, respectively.

As the deputy head of the FAS noted, Minstroy and The Ministry of Industry and Trade must analyze the prices of rebar used in housing construction, on behalf of the Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin . It, in turn, became a response to the complaint of the capital’s developers who reported the rise in prices for these products, which also increases the cost of housing.

The FAS explained that they propose to use this mechanism in export-oriented markets in extreme cases. Specific decisions on duties require a comprehensive study by the responsible executive bodies, they noted.

Earlier on the rise in housing prices the President of Russia Vladimir Putin . The head of state called for a timely response to the changes in order to support the further development of the concessional mortgage program.
