Russia did not have enough money for a megaproject

In Russia now there is no money for the construction of a bridge to Sakhalin. This was announced by the Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin , reports TASS .

“So far, we are not pulling him in terms of money, colleagues. The idea is not bad, but there is still not enough money for it,” he said about the megaproject. Chapter Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov , in turn, noted that the bridge to Sakhalin will definitely be built, the question is about the timing of the project.

For the first time, the initiative to build a bridge from the Khabarovsk Territory to Sakhalin was announced in the early 2000s. Then it was proposed to lay a railway to the Nevelskoy Strait, and the bridge itself was supposed to be both automobile and railway. The project cost was estimated at $ 4.5 billion, but it was never implemented.

The issue of mega-construction was raised again in 2018, then the government was instructed to work out the idea. Two years later, in 2020, the Kremlin again recalled about the project. According to President Vladimir Putin, the issue of project implementation has not been removed from the agenda, and Russia needs the bridge. The fact is that, according to experts, it is most expedient to locate it in the north of the Khabarovsk Territory, where the road network is poorly developed. “And there is work ahead, the cost of which is comparable or even more than the cost of the bridge itself,” he said.

On the other hand, the former head of presidential administration , special representative of the president on environmental protection, ecology and transport Sergey Ivanov opposed the construction of the Russian mega-bridge and called it unnecessary.
