Iran: eight climbers dead in avalanches north of Tehran

Seven other people are also missing while searches are still underway to try to find them.

Eight mountaineers have died and at least seven others are missing following avalanches north of Tehran, Iran, Iranian media reported on Saturday (December 26th).

“The bodies of eight missing climbers were found in the heights of Tehran thanks to the efforts of the rescue teams and the operations of the Red Crescent”, told the official Irna agency , Mohammad Baqer Mohammadi, deputy of operations of the Iranian Red Crescent. The tragedy came on Friday after “avalanches and blizzards” in the mountains north of Tehran, he said.

State television also spoke of at least “seven missing climbers” and pointed out that the search was still ongoing.

It showed footage of a helicopter rescue operation in the mountains of” Tochal and Kolakchal “north of the Iranian capital. It shows members of the Red Crescent in a mountainous area covered in snow, carrying a body on a stretcher.

A member of the team said the mission was complicated because of the “poor conditions weather and snow “.
