Fiji: opposition concludes an agreement to oust Prime Minister

The Social Democratic Liberal Party (Sodelpa) said that his office had voted by 16 votes against 14 in favor of a coalition led by the former head of government.

This is the end of sixteen years in power of the Prime Minister, Frank Bainimarama. The Fijian opposition reached, Tuesday, December 20, to an agreement to form a coalition government, announced political leaders of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (or Sodelpa, for Social Democratic Liberal Party, in English).

The Sodelpa said that his office had voted by 16 votes against 14 in favor of a coalition led by Sitifni Rabuka, former head of government and twice putschist, who should become the next Prime Minister of this Pacific State.

The details of the final coalition agreement were not yet clear. But Mr. Rabuka and his allies within the new coalition mentioned before the election their desire to distend links with China, from which Mr. Bainimarama had approached.

While the news was starting to circulate, supporters of Mr. Rabuka were causing happy songs outside his campaign headquarters. Klaxons resounded and activists danced in the streets by brandishing signaling cones, shawls and signs.

m. Bainimarama arrived at the point in 2006 thanks to a coup, before later winning two elections to legitimize his power. His government has frequently used justice to rule out opponents and silence the detractors and the media.

m. Bainimarama has not spoken in public since the vote on Wednesday. The ballot had not made it possible to decide between the two main political forces, none managing to obtain a majority in Parliament.
