The recent decision taken by Israel to sanction the Palestinian Authority after the vote of a resolution at the United Nations (UN) causes a stir within the international community.

On December 30, the UN General Assembly voted for a resolution requesting an opinion from the International Court of Justice (CIJ) on the question of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories. The text, not binding, also claims that Israel ends colonization in the occupied territories. A few days later, to “pay the price” to the Palestinian authority to have pushed for this resolution, Israel announced a series of sanctions, including financial as the levy of millions of euros on the taxes due to the Palestinians.

In a statement sent to journalists Monday, January 16, around forty UN member states, reaffirming “their unwavering support” to the CIJ and international law, express their “deep concern concerning the Israeli government’s decision to impose punitive measures on the people, the leadership and the Palestinian civil society after the request of the General Assembly “near the court.

“Whatever the position of each country on the resolution, we reject punitive measures in response to a request for advice from the International Court of Justice, and more generally in response to a resolution of the General Assembly, And we call for their immediate withdrawal, “they add.

” deep concern “by Antonio Guterres

The declaration is signed by countries that have voted for this resolution (Algeria, Argentina, Belgium, Pakistan, South Africa, Ireland …), but also by some having abstained (Japan, France, South Korea …) and others having voted against (Germany, Estonia…).

“It is important because it shows that whatever the countries have voted, they are united in the rejection of punitive measures,” praised the Palestinian ambassador to the UN, in a statement, Riyadh Mansour.

Questioned on the publication of this declaration, a spokesperson for the UN Secretary General repeated “the deep concern” of Antonio Guterres concerning the “recent Israeli measures against the Palestinian Authority”, stressing that ” There should not be any reprisals “in connection with the CIJ.

A meeting of the Security Council is responsible for the Palestinian issue on Wednesday. A previous meeting in early January, after the visit of an Israeli minister on the esplanade of the Mosques in East Jerusalem, had given rise to a violent pass of arms between Israeli and Palestinian diplomats.
